FSC certification leads to better conditions for the people of the Congo Basin

A study released today illustrates that the people of the Congo Basin living in Forest Stewardship Council(FSC)-certified logging concessions are experiencing better social conditions than those living in non-certified areas. The report was compiled by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), with funding from CIFOR and WWF, and it demonstrated that the workers and their families living in FSC-certified areas experienced better working and living conditions than those in non-certified areas, including increased worker safety, better access to healthcare, and enhanced housing conditions. “This report confirms that FSC certification has real and tangible benefits for local people and communities,” stated Kim Carstensen, Director General of the FSC. “Social benefits are one of our core three pillars of action, along with environmental and economic benefits, and we are pleased to see that the hard work of our partners can have such a powerful impact on the...

MoU LEI-FSC

Memorandum of Understanding LEI – FSC The Lembaga Ekolabel Indonesia (LEI) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) are proud to announce the entering into an 18-month collaboration to explore a full cooperation in the future regarding the acceleration of forest certification in Indonesia. Both parties have agreed on the full respect for the identity of each other and are committed to work together to harmonize the two systems. An analysis of the compatibility of the LEI standards as national FSC Forest Management standards, conducted by a team jointly appointed by LEI and FSC. LACAK BALAK

Apakah Sertifikasi Lacak Balak Itu?

FSC hosts side event at tenth UN Forum on Forests

On 12 April 2013, FSC hosted an official side event at the 10th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests in Istanbul, Turkey. The event was entitled ‘Certification as a screening tool for investment in the forest sector,’ and key organizations in attendance included governments, academics and development co-operation agencies. The event was moderated by John Hontelez, FSC’s Chief Advocacy Officer, who gave a general introduction to FSC. That was followed by a presentation on ‘FSC and smallholders: a tool for access to finance’ by Joachim Meier-Dörnberg, manager of FSC’s Smallholder Support Project. “About a quarter of the world’s forests are owned and managed by smallholders, which makes them a high priority for FSC,” said Mr. Meier-Dörnberg, before going on to discuss how using FSC certification as a screening tool for financial investment in small forest enterprises (SFEs) highlights the complex issues involved in smallholder support. Mr. Meier-Dörnberg drew...

BM TRADA Forest Products Chain of Custody

BM TRADA has developed its own chain of custody scheme that recognises that there are other certification schemes and forest management initiatives operating in various parts of the world where currently there is no route to market for products because of the absence of independent verification of chain of custody. As part of the development process some of these initiatives may have undergone verification by independent forestry consultants to determine if they would comply, for example, with the UK Government’s Timber Procurement Policy for timber products that are “legal and progressing towards sustainability”. BM TRADA has developed a scheme that seeks to support such initiatives and as such is prepared to give these schemes unaccredited certification under our Forest Products scheme. Currently there are five schemes included in the Forest Products scheme: ...
